BID’s Smart Vision can help!
BID’S SMART VISION IS CHANGING THE GAME FOR SAWMILLS—HOW EXACTLY DOES IT WORK?
This innovative technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze images from cameras that constantly watch production and identify objects of interest, leading to an increase in productivity.
BENEFITS FOR SAWMILLS AND PLANER MILLS
- Decreased downtime and no false alarms
- Improved process flow and efficiency
- Prevents jams, blockages, and breakages
- Better resource allocation
- Reduced labor costs
- Continuous monitoring and management
“After installing BID’s Smart Vision on the trim line and witnessing its smooth operation over the past month, I went back and pulled the information of the previous year, comparing it to this past month of July. What I compared to the previous months was the uptime percentage of the trim line. The objective of this project was to increase uptime percentage with the idea that the Smart Vision cameras would help prevent issues such as false skews, tipple jams and undersized lumber going through the sorter, thereby leading to increased uptime. After comparing the average uptime percentage from August to the previous months, there was a noticeable improvement ranging from 2% to 5%. Understanding that a lot of factors can affect this uptime percentage, we cannot solely say the improvement is from the Smart Vision, but conversation with the operators reveals that the line runs much better now, with a reduction in the occurrence of false trips or stops.”

The system can be deployed at any stage of the process!
Prevents cutting logs with defects or at the wrong length
Gap control and monitoring system for optimal process flow and detection of problematic logs (crossed or too short, large, or small)
Smart monitoring and automation for efficient deck management
Detection of stacked boards and distinction from timber (4x4 or 6x6)
LUMBER HANDLING AND TRIMMER LINE
Detection of anomalies like problematic, stacked, skewed, broken, or too short boards (e.g., trim blocks), boards that are too far from line bar, jams, blockages, and more
PLANER MILL INFEED
Bundle validation alerting forklift driver to remove incorrect products from the chain
